Five vehicles recovered in an hour
Suspicious occupants in a vehicle led police to a handful of stolen vehicles.
The Kagiso Crime Prevention Team outdid themselves by recovering five stolen vehicles in the space of an hour on Women’s Day. The police officers recovered these vehicles, all suspected to have been stolen or hijacked on 9 August between 2pm and 3pm.
Four suspects aged between 34 and 35 were arrested in connection with the vehicles, which are believed to have been stolen in and around Kagiso.
“Our crime prevention team was conducting routine patrols around Kagiso when they spotted suspicious occupants in a vehicle driving around Extension 6. They followed and eventually stopped it. During investigations, the police found that its documents were fraudulent. The 36-year-old driver was arrested and later led the police to another vehicle that was parked in Extension 11,” explained Kagiso Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Solomon Sibiya.
During the investigation, police established that one of the recovered vehicles had been hijacked during July in Krugersdorp.
“Continued police investigations yielded more results, as they recovered a further vehicle, this time in Kagiso Extension 12, which had been hijacked in Honeydew earlier this year.”
A minibus taxi and a Mazda sedan were also later recovered in Kagiso Extension 6. The engines and documents of both vehicles have been tampered with. The minibus taxi was stolen last September in Protea Glen near Soweto.
Four suspects have been detained at Kagiso police station and all five vehicles were impounded by the police. The suspects will appear briefly in the Kagiso Magistrates’ Court facing charges of possession of hijacked vehicles, and possession of suspected stolen vehicles.
“The days of Kagiso being a playground for criminals, especially hijackers, will soon be over. I am extremely glad and proud of my hardworking members for such outstanding performance,” said the Kagiso station commander, Brigadier Sipho Ngubane.
