Donation stolen from WRAPD

Christmas came early at WRAPD, but unfortunately the Grinch showed up.

A generous donation made to the West Rand Association for the Physically Disabled (WRAPD) meant that every resident would be able to watch DStv in his or her room, but unfortunately, that never materialised.

According to Annalene Rossouw, Director of WRAPD, the parent’s of one of the residents decided to assist the centre by donating the funds necessary to have DStv installed in all of the rooms.

At the end of January, the centre received the first quote to have this done, and it was all systems go. But by May, nothing had been done. After numerous telephone calls, Annalene was shocked to find out that Bennie, the man she was in contact with to do the job, had pocketed the R12 000 and disappeared.

Thankfully, the company involved decided that they would complete the project at their own cost. Someone was sent out immediately to start installing the cabling necessary for the DStv to work, and remove all the old cables. Unfortunately, this man also disappeared after a few weeks, and the centre was left with no television access, as the old cables were no longer there and the new cables still needed to be connected.

Annalene then phoned the company to find out what was going on. She was told by a man, whose identity is known to the News, that they were awaiting a booster, but that it should arrive shortly. He also agreed to assist them with installing a commercial package.

Another month came and went, and the DStv was still not installed. On 11 July, the same man told Annalene that he still needed to submit the relevant forms, but that it would be done that same day. A week later, it had still not been done, but, again according to the man, the forms would be sent the next day. Three days later, he told Annalene that everything was ready, but by 27 July, nothing had been done. Annalene was then told that the installation was booked for 10 August.

To date, nothing has been done. The man has since disappeared and no longer works for the company in question. Attempts to contact the man have proven to be unsuccessful.

“I am so sick of people stabbing NGO’s in the back. They let us down and it’s so disappointing,” said Annalene.

She added that this is the second time that their DStv installation has been unsuccessful. In 2009, a different company was approached to have the work done, but the person handling that installation also disappeared with the money.

If you have any information that could help Annalene, please contact her on 011 660 7964.
