Woman assaulted with an axe
Three men who assaulted a woman with an axe were sentenced to six months in jail.
When a woman reprimanded a man about drinking in public, she had no idea that she would end up with an axe to her head.
After the confrontation, the man and his two friends proceeded to drag the woman around while assaulting her with an axe.
The victim’s brother was also assaulted, but managed to escape. The complainant sustained an open wound to her ear. The perpetrators went on to rob the complainant and her brother of their cellphones.
William Seun Meyer, Bafana Basimane Tumane and Musiwa Muthali, who are all between 21 and 22 years of age, appeared in the Kagiso Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, 27 July. They were found guilty on charges of robbery and assault with the intention to do grievous bodily harm.
The three men were sentenced to six months in jail or a R4 000 fine, with a further three-year jail term, suspended for five years. They were also declared unfit to possess firearms.
“This brutal attack on a defenceless woman was unnecessary and unacceptable. Your actions were inhumane and undermined her as a woman,” Magistrate Mukhari said.
He also said that their sentence should serve as a warning, and that they will receive harsher sentences in future should they continue to break the law.
