Couples seriously injured after riverside attack
The couples were severely beaten, their belongings were taken and they were left unconscious.
Two local couples were attacked by three men while on an outing to the Vaal River on Rand Water grounds opposite Vaal Race Course in Vereeniging.
On Saturday, 10 September the couples allegedly travelled from their home in Krugersdorp to Vereeniging to fish in the area. It is believed they picked a spot just off the road, parked their vehicle and started to fish.
According to a local police spokesperson, at dawn three men wearing balaclavas allegedly approached the two male anglers near the water and attacked them with blunt objects. The women were also attacked.
The four were severely beaten, their belongings were taken and three of the victims were left unconscious. The suspects then fled on foot.
“One of the women, 52, who remained conscious managed to put the other unconscious victims into the vehicle and drove them to Fezi Ngubentombi Hospital,” Captain Livhuhani Hani, Viljoensdrif Police spokesperson said.
All four victims sustained head injuries. One of them is still in the ICU as she sustained a serious head injury. Her spouse was unconscious upon arriving at the hospital and succumbed to his injuries on Monday, 12 September.
One of the male victims allegedly suffered a cut wound to his neck. His 57-years-old spouse’s eyes were swollen and blue from the attack.
A murder case has been opened.
The police are appealing to any member of the community who may have seen anything or have any information that may lead to the arrest of the suspects to contact detective Constable Tebadi Mankge of the Viljoensdrif Detective Unit on 072 190 6204.
