Municipality addresses water concerns after pool re-opening

Mogale City Local Municipality recently reopened the Krugersdorp West swimming pool after it had been closed for nearly 16 years.
Since the reopening the News has been receiving worrisome questions regarding the operation of the facility, especially regarding its water usage.
Nkosana Zali, Mogale City Local Municipality (MCLM) spokesperson decided to respond to these questions as it is in the best interest of the new Mayoral Committee to have interaction with the public.
“Every drop of water counts,” Zali said regarding the amount of water the pool needs to stay functional. “The water pump, however, does need the maximum amount of water in the pool for it to operate optimally. To assist with unnecessary wastage, the water is recycled by a process called harvesting. The water is recycled and re-used, a process we encourage all residents to do.”
A manager at the facility recently revealed that approximately 1,2 million litres of water were required to fill the pool, but this was just a one-off.
“The pool only needs to be topped up if evaporation takes place,” the manager said.
Zali also addressed other issues such as security and by-laws. “Two security guards will be placed at the swimming pool. At the entrance to the pool, bags will be checked for illegal substances. If someone in the pool area is under the influence of alcohol or they are found in possession of such substances, security will be alerted. We will then bring in the police and the law shall take its course.”
The municipality plans to ensure available resources are not stripped from social amenities that are in a good working condition. “If this was true we would’ve considered another recreational facility to be refurbished.”
The municipality believes most challenges such as removing illegal occupants from the area have been addressed, therefore they will be able to maintain the facility.
