Let the party begin … safely!
A high number of injuries, some which can be fatal, are sustained during these holidays.
The matric class of 2016 has reached the final destination of their school career. With 12 years of hard work behind them, many, now called “adults”, feel it’s time to celebrate their freedom by going away for the holidays.
Most matric holidays are all about parties and exploring the adult life. But a high number of injuries, some of which can be fatal, are sustained during this time and are related to consumption of drugs or alcohol.
Young adults must be aware of road and vehicle safety, as well as the dangers of alcohol and drug abuse during this time. They should be vigilant about dangers that may occur and must know how to identify potentially hostile or perilous situations. Alcohol and drug abuse may cause misjudgment and have an impact on reflexes, which may lead in turn to irresponsible behaviour. Unpleasant situations such as driving under the influence of alcohol and unnecessary arguments may also occur.
Here are some tips for the matric class of 2016 for this summer:
• Before you depart for your holiday make sure your parents have the contact details of friends that will be joining you on the holiday
• Make sure your parents have the name and address of your destination
• Make sure you have a first aid kit nearby
• Never drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and do not get into a car driven by an intoxicated person
• Ensure that your vehicle is roadworthy and that it has undergone all the necessary maintenance and safety checks
• If you are at a party, make sure that you always buy your own drink and never leave your drink unattended
• Never take drugs. If someone offers you any form of medication or pills, refuse it
• Always trust your instincts
