A phenomenal artist right under Krugersdorp’s nose

Six of Oliver's airbrush artworks are for sale and the proceeds will go towards charity.

Who is the man behind the six beautiful art pieces that were recently donated to former Mr South Africa, Armand du Plessis?

News journalist Nadine Maré’s curiosity was aroused, so she decided to find out more about Oliver Spedding.

Oliver Thomas Spedding was born in 1944 in Krugersdorp and after school he studied Industrial and Graphic Design at the Johannesburg School of Art, where he specialised in the design of children’s toys. After graduating, he worked as a designer for a large South African manufacturer of children’s soft toys before starting his own business as a freelance product designer.

“My mother used to be an artist, and I learnt from her from an early age,” said Oliver.

After 1976, Oliver started graphic designing, book illustration and fine art. He worked mainly in the greetings card industry as a freelance graphic designer where he did hand lettering and fine art for greetings cards. This provided an excellent opportunity for Oliver to develop his artistic talents. In 1982, Oliver began working with an airbrush, which he still uses extensively in his art.

The six art pieces he donated to Armand to sell or donate to a charity were all airbrushed five years ago. The subjects are children he used to know.

Oliver now works as a freelance designer, book illustrator, cartoonist and fine artist. He has published over 80 electronic books, including nine novels, 19 children’s activity puzzle books and eight children’s picture books.

Oliver has big dreams and plans. He strives to live out his dreams for as long as his health will allow. He wants to invite the public to view his art work at www.southafricanartists.com/home/OliverSpedding and also to read some of his writings at www.amazon.com.

Remember that Oliver’s six airbrush artworks are on auction – you can bid on any of them by contacting Armand at armand607@hotmail.com or www.armanddp.co.za or Twitter @ArmandDuPMrSA.
