Sterilising one could save 100

"[Sterilisation] It's definitely a very good solution to the overpopulation problem."

The Friends of Rescued Animals (Fora) shelter in Luipaardsvlei held a spay day at their premises to ensure that the fight against strays and overpopulation is fought properly in the area.

ABC Steri sterilised dogs throughout the day and educated people about the importance of having their pets sterilised.

Seth, one of the biggest dogs that was neutered that day.

“We have such a huge overpopulation of pets,” said Anne Martin, founder of ABC Steri. “Thousands of them are put down every year because there aren’t enough people to take care of all the animals.”

Last year, ABC Steri sterilised more than 1 000 animals. They work closely with the Department of Agriculture to ensure those who are not able to pay for sterilisations can have it done for free. The biggest problem animal lovers and shelters have is that there is not enough homes for all the stray animals in their area.

Alicia and Marelu Coetzee brought their fur kids Roxy and Didi to the spay day.

“We live by the philosophy of saving 100 animals by sterilising one. It’s basically animal birth control, to prevent ‘oopsies’.

“Our responsibility as a shelter is to educate people about sterilisation,” said Linda Scrace, member of Fora. “It’s definitely a very good solution to the overpopulation problem. All the shelters are overpopulated, which means we have nowhere to send them. Sterilisation is responsible animal ownership.”

Anton and Bernadette van Loggerenberg took their dog Lucy to Fora to get her spayed.

It takes five minutes to sterilise an animal. They wake up within half an hour. So the entire process only takes about one hour.

The Fora team Linda Scrace, Coreen Clark, Megan van Heerden and Shayene Suttie with the founder of ABC Steri, Anne Martin.
