Police prepared to keep community safe this Easter

The police have gathered at the Provincial Easter Prayer Service with the intention of preparing all their members for the holiday season.

The Gauteng Police reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring the community stays safe this Easter weekend by relaunching the #SaferFestiveSeason on Tuesday, 11 April.

They have teamed up with other law enforcement agencies and strategic stakeholders and created the integrated #OperationPaseka, to ensure that residents enjoy a crime-free Easter and school holiday.

Over the past few weeks, the new constables of Gauteng have shown positive results because of their sharp policing skills. Their deployment boosted law enforcement numbers and now more than ever they have the manpower to keep the community safe.

Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General De Lange, will lead the crime prevention operations which have been intensified. They are focusing especially on crime hotspots such as shopping malls, where members of the public often fall prey to criminals during holiday seasons.

The police are also appealing to the public to continue to collaborate with them in ensuring that opportunities for criminal activities are minimised, by taking the following precautions:

– Car-jamming – make sure vehicles are locked in parking areas at shopping malls and public spaces

– Do not leave valuable items visible in your vehicle

– Do not accept assistance from strangers. Consult with shop assistants, mall security and police officers that have been deployed at malls during this time

– Be careful and alert when making transactions at the ATM

– Do not withdraw and/ or carry large sums of cash unnecessarily

– Look out for any suspicious persons and/ or cars and inform mall security

– If travelling, be aware of airport following and make sure your home is securely locked and under guard

– Keep the police emergency number (08600 10111) on speed dial

“The biggest challenge during the Easter holidays continues to be road accidents,” said Brigadier Mathapelo Peters, Head of Communications for the Gauteng Police.

“Members of the public should refrain from driving while under the influence of alcohol and other substances. If travelling long distances, make sure to take regular leg-stretching breaks. As the police, we cannot win the fight against crime on our own.”

The police gathered at the Provincial Easter Prayer Service on the morning of Tuesday, 11 April with the intention of preparing all their members to be mentally and emotionally ready, given the recent spate (and increasing number) of attacks on them.
