Local CPF rescues cat-sized rodent from swimming pool

"There's this huge thing that looks like a cat in my pool – please help!"

Members of the Community Policing Forum (CPF) of Sector 3 in the Rant-en-Dal area received a very strange call from a woman who claimed that there was a huge creature swimming around in her swimming pool on Thursday, 20 April.

“There’s this huge thing that looks like a cat in my pool,” the woman said. “I don’t know what it is, but please come and help me get it out.”

Piet Sparks, spokesperson for the CPF, said he had some patrollers in the area and decided to send them to the woman to help.

“When they arrived they saw this thing swimming around in the pool,” said Piet. “One of the patrollers decided to use a net to try and catch it.”

He said they caught the creature in the corner of the pool. “The little guy was a very good swimmer.”

They then loaded it into a large plastic crate and transported it to Saronde Valley, a camp site surrounded by nature.

“It looked like an over-sized rat, so we presume it was a reed rat or something,” said Piet.

“The CPF always goes the extra mile for the community. We’re not just there to chase criminals or help with collisions, we save animals and help the community with many other things as well.”

This is not the first time that locals have had to catch wild animals in the area.

Ruimsig Country Estate had a surprise visit from an unlikely visitor recently when a young female nyala was found bounding around on the empty plots in their area on Tuesday, 7 March. It is believed this majestic animal was spotted by residents of the estate.
