Actor, model … you name it … she can do it

She is passionate about the performing arts and spreading the cheer they can bring.

Bianca McLean is a 17-year-old from Krugersdorp with many talents. She has always had an interest in performing – her parents believe her career in acting started the moment she uttered her first words.

In Grade 8 she was accepted at the Christian School of Arts as a musical theatre major, and this is where the hard hours were put in developing her skills. At the same time, she began her Trinity School of London Performance Arts examinations, where she is currently working on her Grade 8 exam. This is her last exam before she begins studying for her teacher’s qualification.

Bianca recently took up modelling again at the suggestion of Elsubie Verlinden, the South African representative of the Applause Rising Talent Showcase in Orlando, Florida.

Bianca had to enter the first round of the International Arts Talent Showcase (IATS) competition before America became an option. The competition, held at Silverstar, chooses which talent is put on stage for international talent scout Kim Myers, who forms part of Arts in Orlando, Florida.

Bianca went through the various stages of selection and made it to the final showcase. She is passionate about the performing arts and spreading the cheer they can bring. She has on numerous occasions gone with her school to perform at both retirement villages and children’s homes, and has also taken the initiative to start a drama club at Andrews Academy, where she also teaches students. She is a hard worker who is not afraid to go out and get what she wants.

“I would like to see the arts in South Africa develop and flourish so that every talented artist is given the opportunity to shine,” she said.

Bianca is also considered to be a plus-size model even though she is of a healthy weight. She believes that there is a stigma that comes with being plus-sized.

“I still believe the plus-sized industry only showcases hourglass-shaped plus-sized models and I hope this is one thing that will change in the future, as the industry grows. The one challenge I have faced since becoming a plus-size model is having to accept that I will most probably always be considered a plus-size model unless society and the modelling world change. I have realised that my body was not meant to have 28 inch hips and I am okay with that – I have learnt to love my body through modelling,” said Bianca.
