IIAL in schools from next year

Krugersdorp schools say by this time next year, IIAL will have been implemented.

Local schools have yet to meet the IIAL policy for primary schools, although it has already been implemented in many parts of the country.

The Incremental Introduction of African Languages (IIAL) policy was recently adopted by the Department of Basic Education. It aims to promote the use of African languages by all learners in South African schools, thereby ensuring that learners whose home language is not an African language learn to speak and understand at least one indigenous language, known as a second additional language.

The implementation deadline for primary schools is 2018, starting with Grade 1 learners. The principals of two West Rand schools, who have asked not to be named, said the policy will be implemented in their schools from next year. One school staff member told the News that they need to appoint educators who teach indigenous languages before the policy can be introduced into the schools.

The Department said further that the policy will be implemented in Grades 4 to 6 by 2023, in Grades 7 to 9 by 2026, and in Grades 10 to 12 by 2029. Schools can forward their requests for the qualified teachers they need to the Department.

The Department also touched on the possibility of making history a compulsory subject from Grades 10 to 12 as part of the National Development Plan’s vision to emphasise the significance of heritage and history to future generations of our country, in order to encourage a better understanding of our diverse nation.

In 2013, the Department said the policy will be executed by 2020, although it is unclear whether all primary schools will have the required resources in time.
