Here are seven things that happened in history on this 9th day of July that you might have missed, according to www.thepeoplehistory.com:

• On this day in 1932 a bill to legalise beer containing 3.2 per cent alcohol was presented to the senate but was again rejected, keeping the country dry for longer

• About 15 years later Princess Elizabeth, the future Queen of England announces her engagement to Lt. Phillip Mountbatten

• In 1975 an earthquake with a magnitude of almost five strikes Morris, Minnesota

• In 1991, South Africa is readmitted into the Olympics after 20 years after being expelled from the International Olympic Committee in 1970 because of apartheid policies of racial segregation

• Seven years later a magnitude 5,9 earthquake strikes the Portuguese Azores, killing at least 10 people, with many more missing in the rubble

• On this day in 2003 the ferry “MV Nasrin-1” travelling from Dhaka to Lalmohan hits strong winds and high seas, causing it to overturn. At least 500 people are believed to have drowned in the strong currents and 200 are rescued

• On this day five years ago, North Korea’s leader, Kim Jong-Un created a massive uproar when he was pictured with a mystery woman at several events. Later in the month North Korean media confirmed that Ri Sol-ju, a North Korean singer, was in fact Kim Jong Un’s wife
