[FOLLOW UP] Biker who died on Hekpoort’s road of death identified
"How many more are going to lose their lives on this road? What needs to be done for the authorities to act?"
On Sunday 9 July, motorcyclist Dirk van der Nest lost his life when he collided with a vehicle and trailer on the infamous road of death in Hekpoort, at the intersection of the R563 and the N14.
This is the third collision involving a biker on this road this year.
Local ward councillor, avid motorcyclist and resident of Tarlton, Amanda de Lange, expressed her dismay at how motorcyclists are being wiped out on this road.
“How many more are going to lose their lives on this road? What needs to be done for the authorities to act?” De Lange asked.
De Lange recently put a post on Facebook commenting on the questionable lack of services in that area – four hours after the accident, Van Der Nest’s body was still lying in the road.

“My deepest sympathies go out to his family and buddies. May God’s grace and strength carry you through this difficult time. Biker-friend, may you ride the roads of Heaven. To the rest of you, think bike when you drive, and be considerate – they do not have a chance against you!”
Van der Nest’s funeral will take place on Monday, 17 July at the West Rand Bikers’ Church in Dan Pienaarville at noon. The church is situated at 8 Kershaw Street.
