Skeem Saam actress rises to fame

The 22-year-old actress is set to put Kagiso on the map.

Every weeknight at 6.30pm, millions of viewers tune in to watch Bontle, the feisty waitress on the soap opera, Skeem Saam, portrayed by Kagiso-born and raised Kea Leburu.

Keamogetswe Trudy Leburu is a young actress, emcee and dancer who completed her schooling at Bosele Primary and Mosupatsela High School in Kagiso.

Her now familiar face is recognisable as a result of a cameo role she played in the soapie Rhythm City, which was her first television appearance.

Kea, as she is commonly known in the entertainment industry, did not have an easy ride to our screens.

After losing her mother in 2005, she was raised by her grandparents who have shaped her into the promising young woman she is today. In 2006, she auditioned for the popular children’s programme YoTV, but after failing to secure a position as a kiddies’ show presenter, she was on the verge of giving up on a television career altogether.

Nevertheless, the 22-year-old Kagiso resident’s 2013 schedule was hectic, as she became a dancer for the renowned and multi award-winning pop music band, Mafikizolo, while she was studying at the Market Theatre Laboratory. That same year, she was discovered by veteran actor Peter Se-Puma, who became her mentor. She was cast as an extra in the most-watched show in the country at the time, Generations, and then in another soapie, Zabalaza.

Kea also featured in a Lokshin Bioskop short film. In 2014, her star began shining brightly when she performed in a theatrical production, Four Husbands for Malindi, and scored several admirable dancing gigs with Mafikizolo at the South African Film and Television Awards (Saftas) and Metro FM Awards.

Kea is also notable for her guest-star role as Busi in the second season of the television programme Ngempela, and for appearing in the sitcom Ga Re Dumele as Magauta.
