Local orphanage feels the love on Madiba Day

This day saw five organisations dedicate their time and effort to these children by having a braai, baking cookies and playing soccer, among many other things.

“There can be no greater gift than that of giving one’s time and energy to help others without expecting anything in return.” – Nelson Mandela.

These were the words various organisations strove to commemorate on 18 July, when they paid a visit to The Bethany House Trust in remembrance of Nelson Mandela’s legacy.

This day saw five organisations – Johnson’s Workwear, Boston Scientific, Silverstar Casino, Bank Gallery and Emmanuel Old Age Home – dedicate their time and effort to the children by having a braai, baking cookies and playing soccer, among many other things.

According to Adél McCarthy, one of Silverstar’s volunteers for the day, Bethany House was only one of their many projects for the day. During their visit they had a braai, cleaned and mowed the open veld across the road and the home’s lawn and planted a few trees.

“It’s better to be selfless than selfish in this life. This day, to us, is all about Bethany House, and the exceptional job they are doing with the future of this nation. I really admire Gert Jonker, owner of The Bethany House Trust and his team,” said Shane Collinson, Director of Gaming at Silverstar.

Boston Scientific brought with them some clothes, blankets, cake and of course, their braai tongs. According to Laurel Truter, one of the volunteers from Boston Scientific, this orphanage is one of their ‘all-year-round-projects’ which they donate to, assist and sponsor where they can for the entire year.

“We are really happy we can make a small difference in lives of each of these children during the year,” Laurel said.

Needless to say, Bethany House’s playground was filled all day long with happy, boerewors roll-eating, soccer-playing, cookie-munching children.
