Eskom responds to Mogale City’s power cut claims
Mogale City still owes Eskom about R167 million.
A few hours after the News published an article about claims that Eskom had threatened to cut Mogale City’s power due to outstanding debt, Eskom responded by denying these claims.
“Please note that Eskom will no longer be continuing with the Mogale City disconnection notice because their account is now up to date,” the statement reads.
Although this might be a big relief for the public, it does not mean the problems between Eskom and Mogale City have been solved completely. Tjaart Steenkamp, FF Plus councillor in Mogale City, said the the municipality still owes Eskom about R167 million.
“The Mayor has, despite the high debt owed to Eskom, appointed about 100 new employees into council,” said Steenkamp.

“These newly appointed senior personnel in the office will now get salary packages worth about R1 million each. The opposition parties are worried about where the council will get so much additional money from, considering that Eskom is the only service provider that needs to be paid for the lights to stay on.”
This also worries the opposition parties because they claim the community safety department is understaffed, many departmental cars have broken down, and there are far too few vehicles for law enforcement.
“Mogale City’s council has a responsibility towards the community – not only to manage the town properly, but also to protect its people.”
