[JUST IN] ANC shuts down claims that Eskom will cut power
"The municipality refutes these reports and states categorically that it has never had a problem paying for bulk services."
Mere days after the News reported that Eskom will cut power to Mogale City by October because of outstanding debt, a statement was released by the Mogale City Local Municipality denying any such claims.
“The municipality refutes these reports and states categorically that it has never had a problem paying for bulk services, for example water and electricity, and only experienced this new phenomenon for the first time in the latter part of the 2016–2017 financial year,” said Nkosana Zali, ANC spokesperson for Mogale City.

Zali also said that Patric Lipudi, Mayor of Mogale City and Norman Sedumedi, MMC of Finance, met with the State Owned Enterprise and brokers to discuss bringing the municipal debt up to date.
“The municipality has met all its obligations as per the Municipal Financial Management Act [56 of 2003] to pay its debts in thirty days and has not defaulted.”
He described the claims as “regrettable and raising consternation unnecessarily among residents.”
“We wish to assure residents of Mogale City that there is no truth in the reports,” said Lipudi. “We have taken measures to eliminate the debt and to maintain a firm supply of electricity to the people of the city. We have no intention of breaking the pact we have with the people of Mogale City.”

All this is said despite the fact that Mogale still owes Eskom R167 million. Eskom also said that they will no longer be cutting the power to Mogale City because the city’s account is ‘now up to date’.
