Braai Day for vegetarians

Have fun and be creative – the animals will thank you later.

Having a braai on Heritage Day has become the norm for most South Africans, so much so that many have re-dubbed this holiday Braai Day.

This day celebrates South Africa’s diverse cultural heritage, and of course, food plays a vital role.

In celebration of this day dedicated to the country’s astounding diversity, having a braai is a big part of celebrations for locals, including just about every race.

Even though South Africans don’t really need an excuse to have a braai, it’s just extra special to do so on Heritage Day.

But braais are hardly known for their array of vegetarian foods, as it is after all about marinated meat and chicken. However, over the years, vegetarians have become very creative with their braai options.

And yes, thankfully there are more options than just chakalaka, pap and salads.

Here are a few braai ideas for vegetarians, from East Coast Radio, which meat lovers might enjoy just as much.

• Dress up your vegetarian burger patties by switching to watermelon steaks. That’s right – cut a whole watermelon into slices and well, braai it.

• Spice it up a bit by getting a vegetarian potjie going.

• Grill some veggies and make it fancy. You can get creative by braaiing any type of veggies such as mealies and carrots. You can also add a wide variety of interesting spices.

• ‘Braaibroodjies’. All you need is cheese, tomatoes and some peppers.

Have fun and be creative – the animals will thank you later.
