Key West targeted by robbers again

This was the third time this year that robbers hit the centre.

Krugersdorp Police are investigating a case of armed robbery that occurred at Key West Shopping Centre on Monday, 16 October 2017 at approximately 1pm.

This comes nearly a month after armed robbers broke into the Clicks shop in the centre, and is the third time this year that robbers have hit the centre.

It is alleged that the victim was in the parking area of the mall on Monday, on his way to deposit money at a bank, when he was accosted by a suspect who pointed a firearm at him. The suspect grabbed the money from him and fled the scene in a black BMW with an unknown registration number.

Key West Shopping Centre confirmed that an armed robbery occurred in the parking area and said the victim was instructed to hand over a bag containing an undisclosed amount of money. The matter was handed over to the police for further investigation. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

“Key West Centre Management would like to remind shoppers to change their everyday routine, especially when depositing money and to report any suspicious behaviour to security (situated around the Centre) and/ or Centre Management immediately,” said Maxine Edwards, spokesperson of Key West.

“The safety of all patrons and shoppers is, and always remains, the Centre’s top priority and we will continue to remain alert.”

Krugersdorp Police would like to urge the public to be vigilant when driving, especially if they are in possession of money. As we are approaching festive season, it is important to be safe and report any suspicious movements to the police and the security guards at the malls.
