Chances – 1 out of 18 000 and he won

"We weren't even planning to come that day because we had a braai."

President Hyper had its annual car giveaway on Saturday, 21 October in the centre’s basement parking and it was the biggest crowd the store had ever seen.

More than 10 000 people awaited their chance at winning a Renault Duster through a lucky draw. The competition saw more than 18 000 entries and all shoppers had to do was buy a participating Uniliver product, fill in their details on the till slip, and be at the giveaway to qualify to win the car.

The shuffler shuffled the box in the basement and a woman from the crowd was picked to pull out the winning ticket. “Justin-Lee Rudman, is he here?” asked Jorge de Sousa, one of the managers of President Hyper.

A faint “Yes” was yelled and out of the thick crowd came Justin-Lee with his daughter Kiana-Lee on his shoulders. His joy was tangible. Justin and his family, wife Michelle and youngest daughter Lelia were overjoyed and jumped right into the car.

Justin-Lee is a car salesman who had just sold his wife’s car to his sister-in-law, and was planning to buy her a new one. Now he doesn’t have to. “We weren’t even planning to come that day because we had a braai.

But, with President Hyper sending us a message to remind us in the morning, we thought, ‘Why not?’,” said Justin-Lee, recalling the events of the morning.
