Local old age home residents spoiled rotten

On this day, chairperson Melinda van der Merwe and her team made sure to add all the other colours of the rainbow to the blue Monday of the roughly 100 residents.

On Monday, 23 October, local charity chairperson Melinda van der Merwe and her team made sure to add all the other colours of the rainbow to the blue Monday of the roughly 100 residents of Jack Cotton Old Age Home and President Flats.

On this day, House of Hope Charity – a non-profit organisation aimed at helping underprivileged children and elderly – hosted a fun braai day for the residents.

“We have been involved with the old age home for quite some time. We always visit them with food and other necessities, that’s why we thought it best to give them a fun braai day as well. We wanted to lift their spirits for the upcoming festive season,” Melinda explained.

During the event, residents gathered around the braai while Nick Knight from Jack Cotton and Fanie Blom, a charity member, braaied some lovely boerewors. Other dishes on the menu included a wide variety of salads and some well- deserved ice-cream for dessert.

Pastors Ben and Petro van Wyk, who are also involved in the Munsieville and Krugersdorp West area, paid a visit and joined in the fun activities the day had in store.

Later that day, a group of Hoërskool Monument’s (Monnas) learners also paid a visit to lend a helping hand wherever they could.

“The day was a huge success. We are so thankful that we were able to do this for these residents. I trust they had a great time. We’re looking forward to helping them more in future. This was certainly not their last braai,” Melinda said.

She also mentioned that since their establishment in 2008 they have been involved at the Jacaranda Children’s Home and Louis Botha Children’s Home in Pretoria as well as with the underprivileged children and the elderly of Krugersdorp West, Munsieville and surroundings.
