Orient Hills picks itself up after tornado

Basic building materials were donated and supplemented through additional donations from companies and individuals to rebuild.

Hidden among the foothills of the Magaliesburg just outside of Krugersdorp lies the community of Orient Hills informal settlement, which quietly picked itself up and tried its best to get back on its feet after the tornado that swept through the West Rand left a trail of destruction.

While many of the affected companies, malls and hospitals became the talk of the town, more than 190 families, including the teachers and children of Orient Hills Day Care came back to damaged or destroyed homes, and the community’s only preschool was damaged.

Preschools 4 Africa, a non-profit organisation that runs the Orient Hills Day Care as a community project and works in this community called on companies in Krugersdorp to help, and they responded.

With the assistance and kind generosity of JAM South Africa, Conbrako (Pty) Ltd, Builders Warehouse, Sole2Sole and Project Orient, the Preschools 4 Africa team was able to hand out over 400 blankets, 400 tarps, 4 000 food parcels and mountains of clothing, shoes and bread within days of the ordeal. Basic building materials were also donated and supplemented through additional donations from companies and individuals, enabling Preschools 4 Africa to source much-needed building materials and provide the families with a chance to rebuild and start over.
