Seven gate motors stolen in three days

Drift Reaction gives tips on how to prevent the theft of your gate motor.

Drift Reaction, a local security company, recently reported that seven gate motors were stolen between 19 and 21 November.

The targeted areas were Steynsvlei, Driefontein, Nooitgedacht and surrounds.

“We had many more attempts. It was reported that a black Corsa bakkie might be the vehicle used to carry off the stolen gate motors,” said a post on Drift Reaction’s Facebook page.

“Our Tactical Units chased suspects at the back of St Antonius Road on 20 November in broad daylight. We also had a housebreaking during the day in Driefontein, and an attempted housebreaking in College Road the same night.”

The Police Rural Safety Unit launched a few crime prevention operations in the area and this might be why the number of incidents has decreased somewhat.

“Please remain vigilant at all times and report activity on the WhatsApp groups.”

Jacques Treptow, owner of Drift Reaction, gave the following advice on how to keep your gate motor safe:

• Attach an anti-theft box made by the manufacturer of the gate motor – it restricts access to the boxes.

• When you install the anti-theft box, remove the actual gate motor box – thieves don’t want half of the unit.

• When you buy a gate motor, write down its serial number. If it is stolen, report the serial number to the police, and to the supplier of the unit. Suppliers keep lists of serial numbers of motors that have been stolen and when someone brings one in for repairs, they check the system and can catch the criminal and let the owner know.

• You can also install a beam/passive on the motor so if someone fiddles with it, the alarm sounds. If you are linked to a reputable security company, the motor can be identified on a special zone and you can see from your house that someone is at the gate motor/ fiddling with it.

• You can also spray paint the motor (all parts that are sealed) with neon spray. Even the cover. It might look silly but thieves won’t want it.

Treptow concluded his advice by saying, “We believe that gate motors are stolen by people who also sell and install them. Make sure you buy from a reliable person/company”.
