Boogie for vultures

The money raised on the electrifying night will go towards improving their vulture facilities at Hartbeespoort.

Recently a great many animal lovers gathered at the Silverstar Barnyard Theatre in aid of raising money for the Vulture Protection Program (Vulpro) which offers a unique and personal view into the trials and tribulations of South Africa’s vultures.

This fundraising event, which was initiated by Gerrie Schoeman – project coordinator of People for Wildlife – and his dedicated team, saw a room full of supporters boogie, moonwalk and doing the sprinkler to the beat of the 80’s Rewind Party.

People for Wildlife is a section 21 non-profit membership-based organisation that was created as a result of the need for a truly membership-based organisation and the lack of cohesion in the South African conservation fraternity.

“The challenges that these majestic birds have to face to survive are enormous and that is why they are now critically endangered,” Gerrie said.

“Vulpro rescues injured and poisoned vultures and rehabilitates them for release back into their natural habitat. These vultures are then monitored and tracked to ensure their survival.”

According to field technician, Anzelle van Wyk, the money raised on the electrifying night of Wednesday, 29 November will go towards improving their vulture facilities at Hartbeespoort.

On this night, the West Rand Judo Club also joined in the fun and held a fundraiser of their own.

“We had a great load of fun with the Judo club and the general public supporting the cause. We would like to thank everyone who enjoyed the night with us, and we trust that the vultures will benefit greatly,” Gerrie concluded.
