Local art exhibition now open

The museum has hosted this prestigious exhibition for six years.

On Thursday, 30 November, quite a number of abstract, expressionist and hyper-realism artists, among many others, gathered at the Mogale City Museum for the annual Visual Arts Exhibition.

The museum, as part of the Community Development Department, has been hosting this prestigious exhibition, which has grown tremendously, for the past six years.

According to Godfrey Naledzani, the Heritage, Arts and Culture Specialist, the exhibition has become very popular among visual artists both within and outside the borders of Mogale City.

Each year the participants consist of qualified, self-taught and upcoming fine art artists from Mogale City and surrounding areas. This is also a great opportunity for the full-time artists who make their living from participating in different exhibitions throughout the country.

The department’s aims with the exhibition include promoting local fine artists and their work to the public and providing an opportunity for artists to sell their work. Through this they present a platform for the artists to network, as well as the opportunity to learn from each other.

The official opening was also attended by the Executive Mayor of Mogale City Local Municipality, Naga Patrick Lipudi, Members of the Mayoral Committee, councillors, executive managers, officials and members of the public.

“What I like about art is that it brings beauty into our world. Art is also important because it makes our world a better place. It gives colour and shape to our surroundings. It also brings a sense of enjoyment and pleasure,” Executive Mayor Lipudi said.

“I would like to make a plea to everyone in this room, to start supporting our local artists. For all these artists to grow and be involved in national and international exhibitions, it has to start here.

There are very beautiful art works that we can buy for our homes, and our offices, and they come with reasonable prices.”

Mogale City will even spend R11 000 to buy some of the art works to increase the museum’s collection.

For the next few weeks, the general public can visit the museum where they can expect to see the work of a total of 16 amazing artists.

“We are thrilled to host the exhibition every year. We also deal with new and exciting artists and art work year after year. Thanks to them the exhibition keeps on growing. We are looking forward to its growth in future as well,” Godfrey said.
