Five things not to do with a hangover
You want to recover as soon as possible, so here’s some things you shouldn’t do with a hangover.
Everyone wants a magic cure for a hangover, especially when you’re supposed to be preparing for tomorrow’s back to work day. But there’s some things you should know.
1. Relying on some “magic cure” pill, juice shot, or remedy to prevent a hangover.
Everyone experiences hangovers differently. That’s why miracle remedies don’t work. Try all the things you possibly can, but know – this is on you, honey. That ‘one last drink’ wasn’t a good idea.
2. Don’t engaging in risky physical activities
This will probably end in pain or injury. You’re still a little off balance, your concentration isn’t what it’s supposed to be, your head hurts – so don’t hurt anything else. The pain will be more intense. It would be much better for you to sleep. That’s an actual cure.
3. Drinking after drinking
It’s what you call a damp cloth – the cloth already has a lot of fluid in it, so it gets soaked more easily. If your body is still full of alcohol, know that three drinks can make you drunk again. It doesn’t help. If you really have the urge to drink more, have a Bloody Mary. The tomato juice helps.
4. Don’t drink Tylenol
It’s not commonly known in South Africa, but drinking Tylenol after drinking can actually kill you. It’s not a widely available product in our country, but just make sure you don’t take it.
It has to do with your liver – the body’s washing machine. It removes – among other functions – harmful substances from the bloodstream (like the profuse amount of alcohol currently hovering around).
The liver metabolises about 1 drink per hour. If your body can’t keep up with your drinking, alcohol moves out of the liver and into the bloodstream. That’s how you get drunk.
Tylenol has an effect on the liver and if your liver can’t keep up, it creates a byproduct that kills liver cells. This is putting it simplistically – the process is much more complicated, but that’s more or less the result.
5. Don’t drink coffee
Contrary to popular belief, coffee actually worsens your hangover because the high dose of caffeine dehydrates you even more than you already are. Caffeine also gives you energy, and by now you should know energy and partially still drunk don’t mix. One of the main cures for a hangover is sleep and chugging coffee isn’t going to help you sleep. Drink tea instead. It has much less caffeine – just enough to kick-start your metabolism and give it enough energy to flush out the alcohol, but doesn’t keep you from your beauty sleep.
