10 things to do when you have a hangover

Make sure you get to work on the 2nd if you drank on the 1st.

Let’s face it, New Year is fun, until you have to face the consequences of the bad choices you made, and on 2 January, you probably have to go back to work. So here are a few tips to get you over your hangover before you return to work.

#1 – Sleep after drinking

Your body needs some time to recover and it wouldn’t help if you wandered around helplessly. If you have a bad hangover, sleep for as long as you can. Either the night, or sleep in a little.

#2 – Water and juice are lifesavers – drink some

It’s not going to be the most delightful taste, but drinking water or juice the morning after you’ve had too much to drink will rehydrate you.

Keep pouring glasses of water throughout the next day. It helps. Make sure you don’t drink too much water because this can also make you feel worse. Just drink slowly.

Juice is also good for you because it replaces all of the lost vitamins and cleanses your body.

#3 – Don’t drink coffee or energy drinks

Coffee may dehydrate you because of the caffeine. It can also make your headache worse.

Make tea instead. Put a lot of sugar in it. The small amount of caffeine in tea will give you a moderate kick, but won’t dehydrate you.

#4 – Dose yourself with vitamins

A good amount of orange juice (for vitamin C) would really help your body right now. Multivitamins will also help. But don’t take too much.

#5 – Make sure you eat

Even though you’re probably nauseous right now, the food might actually cure the nausea.

Protein rich foods are the way to go. Eggs, bread, bananas or pretzels – even a good packet of salt and vinegar crisps or heavily vinegared chips.

Soup is also good.

#6 – Moving helps after sleeping – so exercise

It will take everything you have left to get up and do something, but it will get your metabolism moving and flush out every bad decision you made. Exercising boosts morale and maybe that’s what you need. You don’t need to break a sweat or to run 100km – a good walk in the fresh air will do you so much good.

#7 – Don’t drink pain-killers

Pain-killers like aspirin and ibuprofen have side affects that clash with the alcohol in your system.

Both the pain killers and the alcohol serve as blood thinners. They can cause an irregular heartbeat and even damage your liver and stomach. Make sure, if you do take these medications, to take a very small dose.

#8 – Showering helps

After you’ve slept, taking a cool shower can actually wake you up quite well. It also cleans off all the mistakes you made last night.

Don’t shock your body by showering under ice cold, or scorching hot, water.

#9 – Treat your urge to chunder

Try a dose of Citro-soda or Alka-Seltzer, or Eno’s. If you’re out of options and don’t have an alternative, try drinking ¼ teaspoon of bicarb in a glass of warm water. If it’s too strong, mix it with a little bit of lemon juice to improve the taste.

Ginger also helps treat nausea. Ginger isn’t the nicest tasting thing, so drink ginger tea or ginger ale. .

#10 – After hangover drinking

It’s commonly believed that drinking a shot after a night out will help cure your hangover, but that’s false folklore. If you really do feel like a drink, use a Bloody Mary as a go-to drink. The tomato juice is a common remedy for nausea and it gives you some vitamins as well. The new dash of alcohol helps transfer the body’s attention to the new alcohol and might help you forget about the pain you’re in.

A “Green Ambulance” is also a common cure. Drinking a Cream Soda after a night out adds some sugar to your body. And be honest, it seems much better-tasting than the other things mentioned.
