Make your resolutions realistic

Each year, people make resolutions for the year ahead, but do they always stick to them?

If the thought of making New Year’s resolutions for 2018 reminds you of the 2017 ones that you failed to keep, go easy on your goals this year.

Resolutions are meant to help us improve ourselves and our lifestyles, perhaps by dropping bad habits that hold us back from being the best we can be, but sticking to them is a challenge.

This year, write down all your resolutions, as well as how you plan to achieve them. For instance, if your resolution is to get fit, write that down, and next to it write how you’re going to do it. Maybe you can start by taking a 15-minute walk every day. Gradually, you will find that you can walk faster, or for longer periods of time. That’s when you up your game, and revise your resolution. In other words, set attainable goals, that are easy for you to reach, and increase your target slowly. Before you know it, you’ll be fit as a fiddle, strong as a horse, and able to take on much bigger challenges.

Taking advice from an expert seems to work for some – like Noelien Mashaba, who changed her diet by consulting with a dietitian who gave her a list of what she should eat, in place of the unhealthy foods she used to eat. “I have changed the way I eat for the better and I feel strong and healthy,” said Noelien.

When you have been disciplined about sticking to your resolutions, reward yourself with something you really enjoy, such as a new hobby or a book if you enjoy reading. According to psychologist Mpho Mntuyedwa, rewarding yourself motivates you to do more to achieve your goal and to feel good about yourself.

New Year’s resolutions should help us reach our life goals and should be realistic. Do not give up when the going gets tough – rather speak to someone who will encourage and support you.
