Legal representation that’s best for you
Finding a good legal expert isn't easy, but you can't leave it until it is too late.
Beware of making the mistake that many people make – not getting a legal expert to represent them, until they are desperate for one and in a tight spot.
You may not find it necessary to have your own legal adviser, especially if you have never been in a legal battle. But once in a while we will all need legal advice even if we never find ourselves in the wrong side of law.
Patrick Zingelwa of Krugersdorp’s CBD had never considered getting a legal adviser, but after buying a second-hand car in January 2016, he had disputes with the car dealership, which took no notice of his complaints about the car.
“I was forced to spend a lot of money on my car because of damaged parts. I wish I had had a legal professional on my side, but it was already too late,” said Patrick.
A legal adviser is necessary for numerous situations, from buying big assets like property, to drawing up a will or starting your own business.
“Legal experts are costly, but if I’d had one before I bought a car, I probably would have spent less on the legal fees than on the car,” said Patrick.
Doing research, talking to people who have had to be represented by legal experts could save you time and money.
Client’s rights when they are being represented:
• Legal practitioners should advise clients about the options available to them.
• Clients need to know exactly who will handle their matter.
• Clients should be told of the risks involved in the matter.
• Clients should be informed of all costs involved.
• Legal practitioners have a duty to explain things in a way the client will understand.
Rights go hand-in-hand with responsibilities. Legally, it is no different.
Here are the responsibilities of the clients:
• Clients should give all relevant information to their legal representative
• Your legal expert should receive instructions from you (the client)
• Ask about costs and calculations beforehand.
• Legal bills should be settled in due time.
• Give feedback to your legal adviser when asked for information.
