Superwomen: career-driven mothers

Modern women take opportunities with both hands, and fulfill their career aspirations while looking after their families.

Taking care of children is normal, and many moms seem to be able to successfully juggle both childcare and work.

The beginning of the year means change for a lot of people, including new mothers fresh out of maternity leave who now have to learn how to master these two demanding callings.

Alice Dlamini is a single mother of one and a nurse. She said, “New mothers should prioritise. It’s not easy when you are employed full time but it is possible. I have a live-in nanny for when I’m at work. Whatever you want in your career you can achieve, but always put your child first”.

Other women find themselves in situations where they are forced to choose between their families and their careers. Katlego Moroke knows this tough decision all too well. “I was single without a child when I started working, and because I worked in the entertainment industry I would work long hours and do night shifts during weekends and public holidays. When I got married and had children, it became difficult for me to juggle my home and work. I had to give up a job I loved for my family and I don’t regret my decision – I’m happy and so is my family,” said Katlego.

Ayanda Mdakane, an IT technician, had to decide between her job and her family four years ago, when she decided to start a family. “My husband knew how passionate I was about my job and that resigning was not an option for me. We came to an agreement that I work from home. I participate in meetings via Skype and I only attend work when I have to be there physically; for example, to sign a contract,” said Ayanda.

Irene Mudau, a professional cleaner, said she is able to juggle work and her children. “My children have understood from an early age that I had to work to support them, Now they are grown and able to work for themselves,” said Irene.

These women agree that if you are a working mother, your family, especially the children, should never feel less important than your job. They all say that when not at work, mothers should spend as much time with their children as possible.
