In case you missed it … holiday tragedies

These and other stories you might have missed while on holiday.

Krugersdorp was fairly quiet over the December holidays, however there were some incidents you might have missed while on holiday.

Here’s a summary of what had happened.

Emergency services found a damaged vehicle near Cradlestone Mall and treated the driver for injuries sustained in the crash.

On Christmas Eve a 19-year-old boy was killed at an ATM next to a petrol station in central Kagiso. The boy was withdrawing money at about 3am when an unknown number of suspects approached him and stabbed him.

His friend, who was the sole witness of the incident alleged that he was with the victim when the suspects approached and attacked them. He managed to escape unharmed, but his friend sustained stab wounds to the upper and lower body. A passer-by noticed the boy lying helplessly and bleeding on the street. He then took him home where he later died. Two suspects, both aged 19, were arrested shortly after the incident, but were released the next day due to a lack of evidence against them.

The Kagiso Police are appealing to anyone who might have witnessed, or who might have information about the incident to come forward. Call Kagiso Police immediately on 011 696 9000/ 9059/ 9065 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111. You may also use the Police tip-off SMS line on 32211 at R1 per SMS and remain anonymous.

There were also a few road accidents to take note of. On Thursday, 21 December at 3.30am a Quick Rescue Services (QRS) ambulance came across a motor vehicle accident on Hendrik Potgieter Road heading towards Krugersdorp, just opposite Cradlestone Mall.

The driver of the vehicle, who was the only occupant, sustained moderate injuries and with the help of the local fire department he was stabilised and treated for his injuries before being transported to hospital. Although the exact cause of the accident is unknown, it appears that the driver lost control of the vehicle which caused it to roll multiple times before coming to a standstill.

On Saturday, 23 December at about noon a QRS ambulance was dispatched to a motorbike accident in West Village, Krugersdorp. They found two people with moderate to critical injuries. Both victims were assessed, treated and stabilised on scene by the QRS crews and staff from other ambulance services before being transported to a nearby facility. It is alleged that the motorbike collided with a motor vehicle travelling at a lower speed. Fortunately the driver of the vehicle sustained no injuries.

At 8am on Christmas day, QRS received a report of a motor vehicle accident on the R24 just outside Rustenburg. Paramedics found that one vehicle had T-boned another. Five people suffered moderate to critical injuries and were treated on scene by paramedics from various services. QRS medics treated one of the critically injured patients and through advanced life support intervention, they were able to stabilise the victim. Two of the victims sadly succumbed to their injuries and were declared dead on scene. All the other victims were treated and transported to a nearby hospital for further medical care.

On Saturday, 30 December a bakkie and a train collided in Tarlton.

The occupant of the vehicle was lucky to escape serious injury, but the vehicle was written off. One of the first responders on the scene alleged that the driver was heading towards Tarlton Police Station and did not realise how fast the train was approaching. The train hit the back of the bakkie, causing it to spin.
