So … the holidays are coming to an end and while most people are heading back to work, some might still be on leave and trying to figure out what to do and how to keep the kids busy.
Here are a few fun things coming up in the next couple of days.

Butterfly walk:
13 JANUARY — The Kloofendal Nature Reserve is hosting a butterfly walk from 9am. Try and catch butterflies with nets and collection jars – you will be shown how to do so without harming the butterflies. Look and learn about them and then release them. Costs are R70 for adults, R60 for pensioners and R50 for children. Bookings can be done on Quicket.
Frog evening:
13 JANUARY — The Kloofendal Nature Reserve is hosting a frog evening from 6pm. There will be a presentation on frogs followed by going to the wetland and dam with nets and buckets, looking for frogs to see them up close. You will even get to hold them and learn about them. You will very likely find other nocturnal creatures as well. Creatures will be handled with care and respect; they will not be harmed. Costs are R70 for adults, R60 for pensioners and R50 for children. Bookings can be done on Quicket.
Hike the Koppies:
14 JANUARY — Join in on a three-koppie group hike of up to 10km through the Melville Koppies. Hikers set off at 8.30am sharp. Park, meet and pay in the upper car park at Marks Park on Judith Road, Emmarentia, opposite its entrance. Costs are R60 for adults and R40 for children – all donations are used to maintain the Koppies. Hikers must be fit with good balance as paths are rocky and steep. Children must be over six years old. Diamonds and Pearls:
19 JANUARY — Barnyard Silverstar presents their new show Diamonds & Pearls – A Tribute to Neil Diamond, Celine Dion & Friends. Neil Diamond and Celine Dion are two of the most successful recording and performing artists of all times. Barnyard Theatre Productions proudly presents a tribute to these two icons in an extravaganza of music and song. All the hits and more are featured with surprise dedications to duet performances. Gin and Bubbly Festival:
20 JANUARY — With craft flavour infused gin, a selection of international gin-and-tonic cocktails and a brand-new bubbly (Prosecco) on tap. There are free cocktails and bubbly to the first 50 women and free gin and tonics to the first 50 men at Hashtag Kitchen and Bar in Craighall. Entrance is free and festivities kick off at 5pm. There will be live performances by DJ Wags, DJ Essential Groove and DJ Forest. The dress code is trendy, funky and fashionable. For more information, contact 011 327 6598.
André The Hilarious Hypnotist:
19 JANUARY — André takes a group of ordinary people and changes them into stars, providing an evening of entertainment for the family at the Pieter Toerien Theatre, Montecasino. André is back with his one-man show with a heap of volunteers. Trained by Max Collie, André is known for his ability to make people jump around on stage at the snap of a finger. He makes his volunteers speak moon language, forget their names, impersonate chickens and perform a host of other routines. Tickets cost R120.
