SA wins continental spelling bee

The SA spelling team also did the country proud by taking the team prize for the most correctly spelled words as a team.

Learners from 13 African countries gathered at Maropeng in December to compete in the second annual African Spelling Bee competition. The title of Africa’s champion speller was up for grabs.

These remarkable entrants represented their countries which included Botswana, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Malawi, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Tunisia, Uganda and Zimbabwe.

The competition had two categories. In the junior section, Mayuri Govender from South Africa shared her first place with Promise Kitara from Uganda. Sheriff Muhammed Oluwatobi from Nigeria, won the senior section and was awarded a full undergraduate scholarship at Monash University South Africa (MSA).

The SA team did the country proud by taking the team prize for the most correctly spelled words as a team.

President of MSA, Professor Alwyn Louw, said, “We are proud to have been a part of the Africa Spelling Bee again this year and that we were able to assist in someone’s education by giving away a scholarship for them to further their studies once they complete their basic education. We are pleased to continue supporting promising young learners.”

During their stay, learners participated in an educational tour of the Maropeng site and the Sterkfontein Caves led by Maropeng curator Lindsay Marshall.

Words from these ‘fossil-fuelled’ tours and from the prescribed reading were also used in the competition.

Participants were hosted by Maropeng at their sustainable learner-friendly venue called Hominin House.
