Toddler dies after plunging into municipal drain

Municipal workers opened the drain and 30 minutes later the boy was found inside.

A two-year-old boy died on Thursday, 11 January, after falling into a hole which municipal workers had just dug.

Kagiso Police opened an inquest docket following the boy’s death after his parents went to the police station to report the matter.

“The boy’s father alleged that on that day at about noon, municipal workers arrived at his residence and opened the main hole of the drainage system,” said Captain Solomon Sibiya, spokesperson for the Kagiso Police.

“They were busy on it while two children aged two and 15 were in the yard.”

About 30 minutes later, the father noticed that his baby boy was missing. He searched the property together with his older son, looking both inside and outside the yard. While busy searching, the older son finally found the toddler inside the manhole and took him out.
