Gauteng Provincial Police spokesperson Colonel Lungelo Dlamini has denied claims that the South African Army had deployed troops to Krugersdorp to help them fight protesters in the city.

“They’re only deployed in special circumstances, for instance when there’s a national emergency,” said Dlamini.

Trustworthy sources, which cannot be named at this stage, have informed the News that two foreign nationals were arrested in Sivewright Street this morning after they were found in possession of narcotics.

The police have not yet confirmed this.

“Police Minister Fikile Mbalula will be visiting Kagiso today and will address issues regarding the circumstances of the situation,” said Dlamini.

Multiple buildings were torched and shops were raided by the protesters, leaving much of the city in ruins. The cost of the damage had not yet been calculated.

Mbalula will walk through Kagiso and Sivewright Street to see what the current situation is.

Reports of more unrest have surfaced since the News’ last update this morning and community members are urged to stay out of Kagiso, Chamdor and Azaadville as the situation can turn chaotic at any moment.

Also steer clear of the offramp from the R41 and try to steer clear of Robert Broom Drive next to Munsieville as well.

The News will continue updating the public as soon as more information becomes available.
