Helping victims of disasters back onto their feet
Gift and his team also helped the displaced families of Orient Hills in October last year, when the tornado destroyed their homes.
Saving lives and partaking in rescue operations is a calling for 27-year-old Gift Malejwe of the Maropeng Working on Fire (WoF) volunteer team in the Cradle of Humankind.
Gift said he first volunteered to work with the West Rand’s fire and rescue department in Ruimsig for two years.
“Passion drives me to help save the lives of those in trouble. I took part in dangerous structural fire rescue operations with the municipality before joining the WoF programme,” he said.
Gift and his team also helped the displaced families of Orient Hills in October last year, when the tornado destroyed their homes.
“The tornado ripped through the informal settlement, leaving people homeless and the area waterlogged.”
The team hosted the community members at a local hall which is in the same yard as the WoF base.
Gift said this programme gives them the opportunity to save the lives of people during natural disasters like the tornado. The programme also aims at protecting the environment and is recognised by the Mogale City Local Municipality.
Gift is studying towards a basic ambulance assistance course and encourages those who would like to venture into fire and rescue to join the WoF volunteer programme, since it helps open many doors.
