Service delivery must definitely be improved

The DA has condemned the recent acts of vigilantism in Krugersdorp, which were brought on by a perceived lack of service delivery, and shut the town down.
Krugersdorp erupted in violence after residents went on the rampage, claiming that the police had failed to act on reports of human trafficking, prostitution and drug dealing.
Residents claimed that the police failed to act on the criminal elements in the area, but, while a lack of service delivery is unacceptable, residents cannot take the law into their own hands.
“This inaction shows that the government and police failed to keep the residents of Krugersdorp safe,” said Alan Fuchs, DA Constituency Head for Mogale City.
“We believe that South Africans do not have to accept crime as an unavoidable part of their lives.
In order to improve service delivery in the area, Krugersdorp needs a police service that is properly equipped, well trained and able to both recognise and respond rapidly to any threat to the personal safety of South African citizens.
“The protest showed that the police are not able to meet their constitutional obligation to deal with the current scourge of crime in the community.

“Ironically, the Mogale City Local Municipality indicated that it supported the shutdown, yet it is the entity that needs to be held accountable for the lack of service delivery in the area.
Police must urgently investigate claims made by residents that drug lords are kidnapping teenage girls in the area and using them as sex slaves.
“Ensuring that the police force, which performs an essential service, is adequately staffed to carry out its core function is the first step in making sure that residents are protected.”
