On Monday, 5 February, animal lovers were shocked by a post put on Facebook by the SPCA Roodepoort/ Krugersdorp. For many Facebook users it served as an eye-opener as to what was really happening to animals around them on a daily basis.
The post contained horrific photos of a dog found as a stray in Kagiso. These photos portray a neglected stray that was found with severe damage to the area around his neck. According to Mandy Cattanach, the manager of the Roodepoort/ Krugersdorp SPCA, the dog had been chained for an excessive period of time.
“Daily we see animals neglected and abused and the same questions always arise: Why? How can a ‘person’, day upon day, watch an innocent creature suffer? How can a ‘person’ walk past a dog which they have chained up to such an extent that the chain has become embedded in the innocent creature’s neck, every day?” she said.

“Don’t these ‘people’ have feelings? Don’t they know the animal is suffering? Do they not care? Maybe the answer is that these ‘people’ couldn’t be bothered because it doesn’t affect them, so why bother with an innocent creature cowering in pain?”
She added that any person who can submit an innocent creature to pain and suffering could do the same to their children, wives, the elderly and other members of the community.
However, animal cruelty comes at a cost, as any person found guilty of any form of animal cruelty can be prosecuted and sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment or R4 000 bail, Mandy said.
“We will find the person who is responsible for this blatant cruelty,” she concluded.
However, without the public’s funding, they will not be able to find and help animals who have been dealt a cruel hand, suffering throughout their lives.
