Clan we do it? Yes we LAN!

'We simply form a community and pull all-nighters together,'

Somewhere in town lies a secret hideaway – a hideaway where terrorists and counter-terrorists are fighting a continuous bomb-planting, grenade-throwing and pistol-shooting battle in an effort to relieve dozens of re-occurring hostage situations.

These are the clans (which can be described as gaming teams) of Aztech LAN – a local local-area network (LAN) – who gather monthly in an effort to put their gaming skills to the ultimate test.

According to Aztech host and co-leader of a nationwide clan known as Ragemachines, Brendon Luyts, these LAN parties are held once a month at Hoër Tegniese Skool N Diederichs Technical High School, where well-known video games such as Counter Strike Global Offensive (CSGO), Dota 2 and Warcraft 3 are often played for up to 36 hours straight.

He also spoke about their most recent LAN party, which was held from Friday, 2 February until Sunday, 4 February. On the first night, a group of about 11 gamers LANned some CSGO, after which a group of about 17 gamers switched to Dota 2 and Warcraft 3 for the rest of the weekend.

“Gamers from all over town come together in effort to share their mutual digital passion. We simply form a community and pull all-nighters together,” Brendon said.

He was also excited to talk about the bright future that lies ahead for the gaming community. He is thrilled to announce that they are in the process of compiling e-sport (competitive gaming) teams, which means that the sport could potentially become part of the Olympic Games in the near future.

“Even though South African teams have been sent abroad in the past to compete in e-sports, it only started surfacing in South Africa earlier this year. It’s the start of a brand new sport here in our country, and we are excited to be a part of it,” he said.

As part of e-sports, gamers usually compete in games such as CSGO, Dota 2 and Star Craft 2. He added that anyone is welcome to join the Aztech Tactical Clan on the first weekend after the 1st of every month at the school. Console gamers are also welcome.

Brendon invites all gamers to bring their best pistols, bombs and grenades to join in the action.
