One dead, three injured after vehicle rolls on R24

The deceased was ejected from the vehicle.

At about 3.20pm yesterday, 18 February, a QRS ambulance was dispatched to a motor vehicle accident on the R24 between Magaliesburg and Rustenburg.

Upon arrival with other services, the crew found that one vehicle with a total of four occupants had rolled.

Sadly, one of the occupants died as a result of being ejected from the vehicle.

The exact cause of the accident is unknown, however it is alleged that the wet road surface caused the driver to lose control while rounding a bend while travelling from Rustenburg towards Magaliesburg.

Although it cannot be confirmed that the deceased wasn’t wearing a safety belt, Arrive Alive gave some general safety precautions that might save lives:

Buckling up is the simplest way to save your child’s life – and not insisting on the wearing of seat-belts is “a form of neglect”.

“Studies in the United States have shown that wearing seat-belts could have prevented 75 per cent of injuries in children under the age of four, and 50 per cent in children aged four to 12,” said the head of the emergency and trauma unit at St Dominic’s Hospital, Jeanne-Marie van der Westhuizen.

“We are failing our children by not enforcing the law, by not using common sense and by not teaching our children to buckle up.”

A chief traffic officer confirmed that it was compulsory for passengers and drivers to wear seat-belts in terms of Regulation 213(4) of the National Road Traffic Regulations under the National Road Traffic Act 93 of 1996.

Cognisance should also be taken of the prohibition by Regulation 213(5) of a person occupying a seat in a motor vehicle which is not fitted with a seat-belt, while those fitted with seat-belts are not occupied. Not wearing a seat-belt could result in a fine of between R250 and R500.
