Second tremor in two months – authorities on high alert

City of Johannesburg’s Emergency Management Services has noted multiple reports of an earth tremor experienced in the southern and western parts of Johannesburg last night, 20 February at about 7.23pm.
Robert Mulaudzi, spokesperson for the City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services, said no casualties or structural damages have been linked to the occurrence as yet.

“The City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services Fire Fighters/ Paramedics and Urban Search and Rescue teams will remain on high alert overnight to be able to respond to any emergency which might be linked to the earth tremor,” said Mulaudzi.
This is the second earth tremor to be experienced in most parts of the City of Johannesburg since the beginning of this year, with the last one experienced on the evening of 23 January at about 9.24pm.
“Communication has been established with the Council for Geo Science to confirm, measure the scale, categorise and further investigate the possible causes of the tremor witnessed.
We therefore would like to urge the residents of the City of Johannesburg to be vigilant at all times. Further information regarding the findings will be communicated to the residents in due course.”
Meanwhile the News asked Krugersdorpers if they had felt the tremor. Corne Grobler said he felt it in Roodepoort, Kgomotso Tsholetsane said he felt it in Kagiso and Aloysha Barkley Jooste said she felt it in Rant-en-Dal.
Reports of Kenmare and Azaadville residents who felt the tremor also surfaced.
The incident was also reported on Twitter, where @bentonislit asked a very valid question: “So whenever the monthly tremor happens in Johannesburg West no one ever tells us what it is that caused it. So we just continue to have live in fear of houses crumbling.”
