A paw-some kind of fundraiser

“In 2017, we were on the verge of closing our doors, but we continue to serve thanks to the support of our donors and sponsors."

It’s hard for start-up charities to keep their doors open, which is why non-profit organisations need to get creative with the way they fundraise. That’s exactly what The 9th Day Rescue, Rehabilitation and Re-homing Centre did this month with their Valentine’s Day themed walk.

The 9th Day is a pro-life animal charity servicing mainly the Krugersdorp and Roodepoort areas. Charlene Barnfield, a volunteer at The 9th Day, said, “In 2017, we were on the verge of closing our doors, but we continue to service the greater Roodepoort area thanks to the support of our donors and sponsors. We have a veterinary bill of R100 000 to pay off and monthly costs upwards of R80 000, so every month we need to think of new ways to raise money.”

On Sunday 11 February, the 9th Day hosted pet-parents and their dogs (on leashes) for a leisurely 3km walk on private land in Kromdraai. To ensure the event was memorable, West Pack Lifestyle supplied a number of pink and blue heart-shaped clams, intending them to be used as water bowls for the dogs along the paths, but the dogs had other ideas and ended up using the clams as baths!

“We ended off with a continental breakfast and everyone had a superb time. We would love to do it again next year as an annual event,” said Charlene.

After the event, the clams were taken to The 9th Day Animal Shelter in Krugersdorp West for the shelter dogs to use as colourful and fun water bowls.

Michelle Engelmann and her pooches joined in on the walk.

Through donations, the 9th Day focus is able to provide vet care as well as vaccinate, de-worm, microchip and sterilise stray animals. Love and patience come standard, so the animals can learn to trust again, with the aim of finding a forever home. During the last year, 9th Day was able to re-home approximately 320 animals.
