Mogale and Rustenburg mayors vow to fight crime together
The two leaders shared experiences and mapped out a way forward.
The Executive Mayor of Mogale City, Naga Patrick Lipudi, recently played host to his Rustenburg counterpart, Mpho Khunou, to discuss ways of fighting drug and human trafficking together.
Both cities have experienced outbreaks of community unrest over drugs and human trafficking which caught national attention.
Mogale City is the second city where Operation Fiela 2 was executed last month after it was launched by the now former Minister of Police, Fikile Mbalula, in Johannesburg to deal decisively with the scourge of crime in the country. As part of the operation, several buildings identified as drug and human trafficking bases were demolished while top personnel in the local police were transferred and new heads brought in for the Kagiso and Krugersdorp Police Stations.
The two leaders shared experiences and mapped out a way forward to completely shut out drug and human traffickers, considering that their modus operandi is always to relocate their operations when shut down in one area by the law enforcement agencies. The meeting was attended by the Executive Mayor of the West Rand District Municipality, Boyce Maneli and his team, as well as the Department of Home Affairs.
A declaration was signed by the executive mayors in which they undertook to exchange best practice on by-law enforcement and policies that will assist in giving far-reaching effect to Operation Fiela 2 and related operations.
They pledged to fully mobilise all stakeholders in their respective cities behind the effort to combat crime.
The municipalities will also collaborate in revitalizing their economic corridors, working with the district municipalities of the West Rand and Bojanala.
Mogale City and Rustenburg are neighbours, with the former being Gauteng’s entrance into the latter in North West.
