Illegal dumping becoming unbearable

Over the past months, a large number of Swanieville residents have grown used to filth, rats and unbearable smells being part of their everyday life.
According to Democratic Alliance (DA) proportional representative, councillor Girly Kubayi this is the result of excessive illegal dumping.
“Illegal dumping has become the norm in the community, especially the veld running parallel to Dove Street. Dumping is done in broad daylight as there is simply no monitoring,” she said.
“Residents and road users can expect to come across rubble, rubbish and dead animals, which are left there to rot. This also causes an unpleasant stench.”

Within the same field community members have established several vegetable gardens, not even three metres away from the rubbish heaps surrounding it.
“Unemployed residents try to make a living off of these gardens, only to find heaps of rubbish surrounding their crops. The vegetable are now being grown amid the dirt and filth, which poses a health hazard to those eating them,” Girly said. “The community says they are dumping in open spaces because of a lack of designated dumping areas provided by the local municipality.”
It has subsequently become Girly’s aim to make the municipality aware of the illegal dumping situation her ward is currently facing, and to have something done about it.
