Girl Guides prove they can master cooking skills

This competition was no easy feat when each of the three divisions had to cook with prescribed cooking methods and minimal adult assistance.

On Saturday, 5 May, the Gauteng West Girl Guides held their regional ‘Master Chef’ Cooking Competition at Rant-en-Dal School. This competition welcomed Girl Guides from Florida to Randfontein.

The event is held every second year and saw close to 100 girls entering this time. The participants were divided into teams of about six girls each and were given the task of preparing a delicious two-course meal for the judges.

The young cooks were given mystery ingredients such as yeast, beetroot and coconut. They were scored on how creatively they were able to use these ingredients in their dishes as well as their general cooking skills, hygiene, safety and team work.

After three hours of cooking and decorating the masterpiece dishes, professional chefs Maxine Webber and Durell Barnett from Silverstar Casino were among six of the judges who had the yummy tummy-filling task of deciding on the winners.
