One of the officers sustained serious injuries and had to be airlifted to hospital.

At approximately 7.30pm on Friday, 18 May, Netcare 911 responded to reports of a very serious collision on the R24 near the R400 crossing, not far from the Cradle of Humankind.

Nick Dollman, spokesperson for Netcare 911 said their paramedics and other services as well as the Fire Department and police attended to the incident.

“Paramedics attended to four patients at the scene – three males and a female. Two of them were police officers,” said Dollman.

One male patient sustained very serious injuries and was attended to by Advanced Life Support paramedics. Due to the nature of his injuries and the rural location of the incident, the Netcare 911 specialised helicopter ambulance was called to the scene to airlift him to a Johannesburg trauma unit for the urgent care he required.

The three other patients sustained moderate injuries and were stabilised at the scene before being transported by ambulances to hospital for further assessment and care.

The cause of the accident is subject to further investigation.
