Drug awareness campaign causes ruckus in town

Mogale City community members subsequently committed themselves to work closely with police in dealing with the scourge of drugs which are rife in the area.

The News’ Facebook page was flooded with queries about why there’s so much police presence in town.

It was because of a recent alcohol and substance awareness campaign conducted by the Gauteng Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Community Safety, Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane who was accompanied by the Mogale City Executive Mayor, councillor Naga Patrick Lipudi.

Numerous police vehicles, blue light vehicles and other safety and security officers escorted the group through the streets of Krugersdorp on 22 May. They even blocked off midday traffic at some of the large intersections in town.

Someone even made a joke and commented on Facebook that the Mayor needed a police escort to go by a Big Mac meal. Fortunately most of the comments were directed towards the funnier side of the situation.

The MEC distributed pamphlets highlighting the dangers of engaging in alcohol and substance abuse.

She also used the opportunity to interact with community members on the importance of reporting drug lords and rooting out drugs in their respective communities. Mogale City community members subsequently committed themselves to working closely with the police to deal with the scourge of drugs, which are rife in the area.

The campaign yielded positive results as two illegal liquor outlets were closed during the raid by the law enforcement agencies. The outlets had no compliance papers and alcohol was confiscated in the process.

Three suspects were arrested as well, due to their lack of proper documentation and were taken to the local police station. Two drug addicts who came in voluntarily were taken for medical check-ups to enable them to be booked into rehabilitation centres.
