‘Tall grass caused motorcycle accident’
Mogale City looks like a jungle because of terrible housekeeping by the municipality.
On Wednesday, 25 April, a motorcyclist narrowly escaped death on Paardekraal Drive where the traffic from Sneeuwberg Avenue enters the main road.
A driver entering from Sneeuwberg Avenue and turning right into Paardekraal Drive heading towards Silverstar could not see the motorcyclist coming from the Paardekraal Drive/ Viljoen Street intersection and drove in front of him. The motorcyclist tried to avoid the vehicle, but it was too late.
Witnesses who saw the accident confirmed that the tall, uncut grass on the island between the two lanes is normally cut short and bears flowers.

They believe the lack of housekeeping in the city is the main cause of many accidents, because drivers are unable to see past the overgrown grass, shrubs and trees.
“Of late, Mogale City hasn’t been doing much housekeeping, and keeping pavements clear of obstructions is one of the most important service delivery responsibilities they have,” said Amanda de Lange, Freedom Front Plus councillor for the city.
She visited the scene of the accident to confirm the allegations after the incident had happened.
“I drove up from Sneeuwberg Avenue and turned right into Paardekraal Drive. I could scarcely see the roofs of oncoming motor vehicles. It’s impossible to see a motorcyclist approaching from the left because the grass on the island is too tall,” she said.
“It’s a dire situation in a municipality if the lack of funds and municipal services becomes a threat to the lives of people who live in and travel through the town.”
De Lange said Krugersdorp had never been in such a bad, derelict state, and she isn’t the only person who believes this.
Marietjie Kuhn Wessels, a member of the community, posted a complaint on Facebook saying, “Mogale City looks like a jungle. When are the fields, parks, pavements and trees going to be cut and cleaned? It serves as hiding places for evildoers. Councillors, please talk to us. We are the residents and with you I believe we can think of a resolution for this issue.”
De Lange finished by saying: “We are hopeful that the visit the Freedom Front Plus paid to the Gauteng MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs will bring about the urgent changes Mogale City needs, as this municipality is hovering on the brink of losing it all.”
