Owl Rescue Centre finds a way to keep straws and plastic from killing sea creatures
Here's how you can help prevent plastic bags and straws from ending up in the ocean.
The Owl Rescue Centre in Hartbeespoort has found a way to rid the environment of plastic bags and straws – two items that kill thousands of beautiful sea creatures each year.
The centre has machines that turns plastic into owl houses, bat houses and even bee hives.

“The idea behind the plastic recycling project is to have the maximum impact on conservation, and not being able to use plastic bags and straws – which are huge culprits in the wide-spread harm caused by plastic – was a concern,” said Danelle Murray, founder of the Centre.
“So, we started experimenting and realised that we can, by changing the melting temperature of the machines, incorporate plastics such as bags and straws into this project.”

They’re now urging the community to help them recycle plastic to use as material for these houses.
“We’ve found a better way for community members to collect plastic items as well – we have large Plastic Recycle Bags that community members can buy and fill with their waste plastic. Once the bag is full, send us a WhatsApp and we’ll collect it. Our driver will replace the bag with an empty one and you are good to go again. We wanted to make it possible for each and every household to participate and recycle.”

The centre has already delivered 1 000 bags to members of the community, and has started collecting plastic. They’ve already collected enough to manufacture 120 owl houses.

Current Account Number: 1030819580
